Three Promotion Busters

You thought you were on the fast track to the top of your career.  Everyone tells you how smart you are.  But your coworker, Michelle gets promoted instead of you.  Could you be harming your career advancement with these three promotion "busters"?

1) Taking too Long to Follow-up – Procrastination has never been good, but when it comes to your career it can be detrimental.  Failure to act quickly on your supervisor's request will breed resentment.  Your job is to make your boss look good and untimely completion of a project could cause your boss to lose credibility amongst upper management.  

If you have too many projects on your plate sit down with your supervisor and prioritize your assignments.  What you think is important does not always coincides with your supervisor's expectations.

2) Not Speaking Up! – Credit goes to the person that brings up the great idea and not always to the person that formulates it.  You can have a brilliant idea that would greatly improve client retention at your company, but if you never tell anyone nothing will happen.  Learn to speak up when you have a good idea.  If you do,your boss and coworkers will see you as the "Idea" person.

If you are uncomfortable speaking out during a staff meeting, pull your boss aside afterwards and speak with her privately about your great idea.  Work with you boss to present the idea together to upper management.

3)   Participating in Office Gossip – As the old saying goes: "If you can't say anything nice about someone, don't say anything at all".  Although it is tempting at times to vent out your frustration about work or your boss to your coworkers, you will quickly discover that those negative remarks inevitably find their way back to your boss.   If you are upset about a situation and it warrants some action, discuss the issue privately with your supervisor.  If you just need to "vent", discuss the matter with people outside the office, like your family.
