Dress for Success - Image is Everything

Everything you have heard about the importance of dress is true. How you look when you step out the door to start your workday will follow you throughout the entire day. What you are wearing, how your hair looks and how your make-up is applied will leave a lasting impression on each person you interact with. Make sure it is a good one! Although each industry and even each company has their unique acceptable forms of dress, here are some general guidelines that can be used anywhere.

The best advice on dress is to find someone successful in your company you admire and follow their lead. It doesn't matter if they are female or male, look at their style. Do they tend to be more formal and wear suits everyday? Do they wear conservative colors like black or navy? When they are casual, do they wear jeans or nice pants? This will give you a good visual guideline to follow. You don't have to buy the same designer clothing, just search out similar colors and styles.

Business attire ranges from the ultra conservative navy suits to a less formal solid colored dresses. Whichever style you choose, it is important to stick with subtle colors and avoid fancy designs. If you want to promote a professional image, keep the length of your skirt or dress at knee level or below; stay away from low cut tops and tight skirts or tight tops. Also make sure you wear the appropriate undergarments. Skirts should be accompanied with the proper slip and sheer blouses should be worn only with conservative camisoles (Madonna you are not). If you buy good quality clothing and stick with conservative colors and a simple classic look, your outfit will be acceptable in all situations and will last you for many years to come.

If your company allows casual attire, you'll need to determine what type of image you are promoting. If you are in a conservative industry or want to maintain a professional image avoid jeans and keep the cutesy fun stuff for weekends. Business casual dress or "spiffy casual" consists of a nice pantsuit or nice slacks and a conservative blouse. Remember even on a casual day, your colleagues will be evaluating your dress. Keep the competitive edge. Don't let your guard down, just because everyone else does.

Your shoes are also an important part of your outfit. Professional women usually veer away from open-toe shoes, fancy designs and very high heels. A classic pair of black or navy low to medium pumps will fit in almost every situation. Just don't forget to replace the heel taps as they wear down and keep your shoes polished and in good condition. Find a quality shoe repair store because they will save you a lot of money and keep you looking sharp.

Although most women wear natural colored nylons, you can add some variety by wearing other colors. If you shoes and skirt are different colors, your nylons should always match the color of your skirt, not your shoes. If you use an ensemble of matching skirt, nylons and shoes, it will result in a streamlined look that will make you appear taller and skinnier. You have probably heard that the taller, more physically fit looking person gets the job. So why not use it to your advantage and Dress Your Way to Success!
